A trip on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway in Tamil Nadu, India from Mettupalayam to Ooty – sometimes called The Ooty Toy Train.
Beautiful scenery on this UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is truly unique and the only rack and pinion railway in India.
We met some lovely people long the way, which lasts for nearly 5 hours, covering 46 kilometers – a thoroughly unforgettable experience.
If you are going to go on a trip on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway or The Ooty Toy Train as it is often known you need to ensure that you book well in advance as it is a very popular tourist attraction with Indians and foreigners.
You need to get to the station early as you then have to redeem your tickets from an office opposite the station – which isn’t very clear when you first book the Toy Train.
Don’t worry about getting breakfast before you get to the station as this can be bought at the station café and taken on the train to savour as you start your voyage. It was just about getting light as we started out on our trip to the station and we nearly missed the train as the road was blocked by a herd of wild elephants – but we just got there in time.
This is a really unique rack and pinion railway and an absolute must to do for tourists – there are lots of stops on the way, as the steam train loads up with water, to have a great view of the stunning jungle scenery.
A trip on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway in Tamil Nadu, India from Mettupalayam to Ooty will always be a memorable trip and it is well worth the trouble of booking it and getting there early.
