The Amer Fort Jaipur

The Amer Fort Jaipur

Amer or Amber?

The Amer fort, often referred to as the ‘Amber Fort’ is just 20 minutes outside of Jaipur and dominates the hillside, as it was meant to. Built over an 11th century for in the 16th century, it is still as impressive today as it was centuries ago and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2013.

The name Amer fort, or Amber fort, comes from the Ambikeshwar Temple on the Aravalli hills, on Cheel ka Teela (Hill of Eagles).

Rugged & Beautiful

The outside of the fort is built from red sandstone, but the interior is breathtakingly beautiful with white marble floors and intricately carved sculptures and fretwork, making it a welcome rest from the blazing sun.

Inside the courtyard is the Diwan-e-Aam, or “Hall of Public Audience”, the Diwan-e-Khas, or “Hall of Private Audience”, the Sheesh Mahal (mirror palace), or Jai Mandir, and the Sukh Niwas and there is a temple near the Ganesh Gate, there is a temple dedicated to Shila Devi.

Visiting

We went in the off season, in May, when there are less tourists, but it was still quite packed, so in the high season it could be a bit of a squeeze.

The fort opens daily from 8am until 5.30pm and there is a light show, but you will need to check the times according to the season.

It is also worth a visit to the town of Amer in the valley while you are here, which has a step well and several small temples and not many tourists appear to make it down to here.

Getting there

The Amer Fort is about 10 kilometers from the centre of Jaipur, so probably best to get a taxi unless you like long tuktuk rides or are brave enough to take the bus.

You can break the journey by visiting Gaitore on the way and The Jal Mahal on the way back.

At the bottom of the hill up to the fort there are elephant rides available, but please don’t take one as there are serious concerns about the mistreatment of the elephants.

Food and drink

While inside the fort, it’s worth eating at 1135 AD for royal and opulent atmosphere. It is an Indian fine dining restaurant situated on the second floor of Jaleb Chowk and opens until 10:30 p.m. serving authentic Rajasthani cuisine to get the feeling that your living like a maharaja.
