Just a short walk from the Medina and 5 or so minutes from Jemaa el-Fnaa lies The Bahia, a beautiful palace and gardens, built in the late 19th century, intended to be the greatest palace of its time.
The name means “brilliance”, was built to capture the essence of Islamic and Moroccan styles.
The palace is surrounded by an 8,000 m² garden with rooms opening onto courtyards.
This is another place to get away from the crowds and the touts of the Souks and the bustle of Jemaa el-Fnaa – a welcome breath of fresh air.
Aaprt from the architecture and the carvings, marble and stained glass all the rooms in the Bahia Palace are empty. When the Grand Vizier, Ba Ahmed ben Moussa died, many people, including his wives and the sultan took all the art work and furniture from the palace to decorate their own palaces.
It may put some off from visiting, but it is still worth a look as the architecture is superb.
